Growth of Medical Imaging Devices in India
India’s domestic medical device production has surged, climbing from 10% to 30% of domestic requirements in just five years. This growth is driven by significant infrastructure scaling and targeted government support. Currently, India’s medical imaging landscape includes approximately 260,000 active devices across hospitals and clinics.
While high-volume modalities like X-Ray systems and ultrasound units continue to form the vast majority of this installed base, there is a notable shift toward premium diagnostics.
Specifically, the nation now supports an installed base of about 3,500 active MRI machines, with an annual growth rate of 350 to 400 new units.
The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme has been pivotal to this progress, funding 19 greenfield manufacturing facilities dedicated to advanced diagnostic imaging.
This initiative has effectively accelerated local production, enabling domestic manufacturers to capture nearly 30% of market demand at significantly lower costs, ultimately strengthening India’s healthcare self-reliance and global manufacturing footprint.
